Artist from Santander, her work questions and celebrates the possibilities and uncertainties of painting, highlighting its beauty and impossibility.
Vicky Uslé, 1981, Santander
Vicky Uslé’s practice unfolds as an open field of thought and experience, where her work, open and transcendent, questions and celebrates the possibilities and uncertainties of the medium, passionately and intelligently illustrating the essential qualities of painting and its construction, its beauty and impossibility.
Each of her brushstrokes is an exercise in courage, a link and at the same time a representation, a constructive and questioning vehicle, in a substantial and open space, in continuous displacement. Painting as architecture of things and worlds, from its own organic and substantial consistency, from its formation, its germ and its ruins, from a solid commitment to "the most difficult image of art".In recent years, her practice has expanded toward new materials and languages, extending her research beyond the traditional pictorial surface.
The incorporation of glass as a sculptural medium introduces a new dimension in her exploration of light, reflection, and transformation—qualities already embedded in her work. In dialogue with photography, which now assumes a more central role, these works form a body in which the image is understood as process and trace rather than representation. Glass, as a liminal and mutable material, activates a sensorial dimension and connects with personal and familial memories linked to light and landscape.
With a degree in Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, USA), her education extends into fields such as marine biology, anthropology, philosophy, and architectural history, which inform her understanding of matter, time, and form. She lives and works between New York and Cantabria. Her work has been exhibited internationally in museums, institutions, and galleries since 2007, and is included in public and private collections. She has participated in major art fairs such as ARCO Madrid on several occasions, reinforcing her presence within the international art scene.
