Myths & Monsters

In Witchcraft and the Gay Counterculture (1978), Arthur Evans proposed a genealogy of defiance: reclaiming witchcraft as a space of resistance against patriarchal, Christian, and capitalist hegemony, and embracing the monstrous as a liberating force. Evans understood that the figure of the witch, the heretic, the monster, was never merely an enemy invented by power, but a mirrored image of what threatens its order. The witch embodies the collective, the sensual, the nocturnal, that which disobeys; the monster embodies the body that doesn’t fit, that multiplies, that cannot be domesticated. It is in this territory of rupture and fabulation that House of Chappaz positions itself at ARCO 2026, presenting the booth Myths & Monsters as a contemporary coven, where queer, feminist, and experimental narratives intertwine with art’s radical capacity to summon other realities.

Myth is not a distant fable, but a living device: the possibility of reading the present through symbolic disobedience. The monster is not the feared Other, but the sign of that which frees itself from the norm. It is within this tension that the selection of artists unfolds, each one invoking their own spells: Fito Conesa conjures sonic and visual landscapes in which intimacy becomes ritual, and music becomes a channel for shared memory. Antonio Fernández Alvira dismantles the rhetoric of authority: his sculptures and installations expose the violence embedded in the aesthetics of power. Carmen Ortíz Blanco works from the fragile and the tactile, deploying a poetics of vulnerability that reveals its strength as a political gesture. Eli Cortiñas weaves together archive, cinema, and performance to craft critical fictions where desire and gender emerge as unstable narratives. Raisa Maudit transforms the language of queer counterculture into a symbolic arsenal: performances, objects, and images that function as spells of resistance. Diego del Pozo Barriuso explores the construction of collective subjectivities, generating affective maps against invisibilization and erasure. Anna Moreno activates non-linear temporalities, creating fictional spaces where the past and the future contaminate each other with possibility. Vicky Uslé, through abstraction, generates organic forms that seem to breathe like autonomous creatures, somewhere between mineral, vegetal, and spectral.

Together, these practices form an ecosystem of images, sounds, and gestures that reject the uniformity of the canon. The monster, like the witch in Evans, reminds us that there is always another way to inhabit the world: beyond obedience, beyond dogma, in the luminous territory of the strange.
